How We Turned $13,146 Into Over $33,000: A Real-World Small Account Update

When it comes to investing, everyone loves to talk about 10-baggers and perfect trades. But the truth? Real portfolios are messy. They have winners, losers, home runs, and total dogs. This is a story about one of the small family accounts I manage — and how, with discipline and a clear strategy, we turned $13,146 into $33,515 over the past few years.

The Setup

This account began in April 2021 with just $13,146 in deposits. No huge windfall. No meme stock luck. Just intentional positioning, small trades, and a risk-aware mindset.

As of today, the account has grown +155% and is up +46% since what many called the "Trump Tariff Crash" — but what I think of as a planned correction that created serious opportunity.

What Worked

Precious Metals Core: Long-term holds in First Majestic (AG), Barrick Gold (B) Sprott Gold (PHYS), and PSLV added a resilient backbone.

  • Options With Edge: Select calls in INTC, B, and BB, opened during volatility, delivered outsized returns.

  • Opportunistic Growth: Rotations into no-brainers like GOOG and DELL on weakness (DELL CLOSED)

  • Cash Discipline: Large portions of the portfolio stayed in cash during uncertain macro stretches. That saved us more than one drawdown.

What Didn’t Work - aka the dogs (woof)

TLRY, VIBE, KG and a few others reminded us that not every swing pays off.

INTC $30 calls are underwater, a good example of what happens when timing is off.

But here’s the key lesson:

"Anyone who tells you every trade is a winner is lying. The real game is in position sizing and **knowing when to take the shot."

We took some big swings with small capital — and some of those have paid for the whole show.

Why A Plan Matters

If you're managing your own small account or helping family accounts grow — you don't need magic. You need:

  • Clear themes

  • Asymmetrical setups

  • Risk control

  • Patience

This wasn't luck. It was strategy.
